The Google Fitbit Air is a screenless tracker. All your data shows up in the Google Health app on your phone. That leads to a common question from our customers in Dubai: do I have to pay a monthly subscription? The short answer is no. Core tracking works without a subscription. The optional Google Health Premium plan adds the Gemini-powered Health Coach and some deeper insights. This guide covers what is free, what is paid, and what UAE and GCC buyers should know before they buy.
What you get without a subscription
Once you pair the Fitbit Air with the Google Health app, you get the tracker's core features with no monthly fee. Based on Google's official product pages, these include:
- 24/7 heart rate, steps, distance, calories and Active Zone Minutes
- Sleep tracking, with your nightly results in the app
- Health metrics, including SpO2 (blood oxygen), heart rate variability (HRV) and skin-temperature variation
- Cardio Load and Readiness, which show how hard you have trained and how ready you are for more (some detailed views may vary by plan, so check your app)
- Heart alerts, such as high or low heart rate notifications and AFib alerts while you are still or sleeping
- Nutrition and hydration logging, cycle tracking, and sharing or leaderboards with friends
Note: The Fitbit Air is a wellness device. AFib alerts and other health notifications are not a medical diagnosis. Always speak to a doctor about any health concerns.

What Google Health Premium adds
Google Health Premium is the new name for Fitbit Premium. Google lists its price at US$9.99 per month or US$99 per year. Its main feature is the Google Health Coach, built with Gemini. According to Google, Premium includes:
- A 24/7 AI coach you can chat with about your sleep, fitness and wellness data
- Adaptive weekly fitness plans that adjust to your goals, routine, equipment and any injuries you mention
- Detailed sleep insights and daily guidance on the Today tab
- Nutrition and metabolic coaching, including meal logging by photo, voice or document
- Cycle-aware coaching, plus a premium video workout and mindfulness library
Google says each Fitbit Air includes 3 months of Google Health Premium, which you redeem in the Google Health app. Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers also get Premium at no extra cost.

Important for UAE and GCC buyers: Premium availability
When we checked, Google's help page listed Google Health Premium in 37 countries. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman were not on that list. Google also notes that Premium content may be in English only and that you must be at least 18 to sign up.
In practice, this means:
- The Fitbit Air works fully as a tracker in the UAE. Steps, heart rate, sleep, SpO2 and heart alerts do not depend on Premium.
- Premium and the Health Coach may not be available on a UAE-based Google account yet, including the bundled 3-month trial. Google may add more countries later.
- If Premium becomes available in your region, the Gemini coach is a nice extra. You do not need it to get good value from the tracker.
We suggest buying the Fitbit Air for the tracking itself and treating Premium as a bonus if it appears in your app.
Practical tips for getting the most from the free app
- Wear it to bed. The Fitbit Air is light and has no screen, so it is comfortable overnight. Sleep data drives your Readiness score.
- Watch Cardio Load in the heat. Training outdoors in UAE heat and humidity raises your heart rate. Cardio Load helps you see when to ease off.
- Use the quick charge. About 5 minutes on the charger gives roughly a day of battery. A full charge takes around 90 minutes, and battery life is up to 7 days.
- Keep your phone nearby on runs. The Fitbit Air uses your phone's GPS for route and distance.
