Google now makes two very different Fitbit trackers: the new screenless Fitbit Air (launched May 2026) and the long-running Fitbit Charge 6 with its colour touchscreen. Both track heart rate, sleep and workouts, and both pair with the Google Health app. So which one makes more sense for life in Dubai and the wider UAE? Here is a clear, side-by-side look based on Google's official spec pages.

The big difference: screen or no screen
The Charge 6 has an AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 3, so you can glance at the time, your heart rate or a workout in progress. The Fitbit Air has no screen and no buttons. Everything you want to see lives in the Google Health app on your phone.
That sounds like a downside, but for many people it is the point. With no screen lighting up at night and no notifications buzzing at you in meetings, the Air is a tracker you put on and forget. If you want to check data on your wrist, though, the Charge 6 is the obvious choice.

Some Charge 6 features, such as Google Wallet, ECG and certain health readings, depend on country support. Check availability in the UAE before relying on them.
Health tracking: closer than you think
On the core health side, the two are very similar. The Fitbit Air tracks 24/7 heart rate, steps, Active Zone Minutes, distance and calories, plus SpO2, heart rate variability (HRV) and skin-temperature variation. It also gives you Cardio Load and a daily Readiness view to help you decide whether to push or recover, and it can send AFib alerts while you are still or asleep.
The Charge 6 adds an ECG app that lets you take an on-demand heart rhythm reading, where supported. If an ECG is important to you, that is a real reason to pick the Charge 6.
Note: both are wellness devices. AFib alerts and ECG readings are not a medical diagnosis. Speak to a doctor about any health concerns.
Running and outdoor workouts in the UAE
This is where the choice matters most. The Charge 6 has built-in GPS, so you can run along Kite Beach or the Al Qudra track and leave your phone at home. The Fitbit Air uses your phone's GPS, so for accurate pace and distance you will want your phone with you, in a running belt or armband.
For gym sessions, padel, walking in the mall or indoor classes, that difference hardly matters. Both are water resistant to 50 m, so pool laps are fine too.
Comfort, sleep and the Dubai heat
At 12 g with its band, the Air is very light, and its soft textile band (130–210 mm wrists) is comfortable for sleep. In summer, a smaller tracker with a breathable band can feel nicer than a bulkier one. The Rye Stephen Curry Special Edition also has a sweatproof, water-resistant band coating, which helps on hot outdoor days.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the Fitbit Air if you want 24/7 health and sleep tracking with no distractions, a light band you forget you are wearing, and you usually have your phone nearby.
- Choose the Charge 6 if you want a screen, phone-free GPS runs, an ECG app, or tap-to-pay and notifications on your wrist (where supported).
Core tracking on the Fitbit Air is free in the Google Health app. An optional Google Health Premium subscription adds the Gemini-powered Health Coach. If you are new to the Air, our Fitbit Air setup guide for the UAE walks you through pairing step by step.

FAQ
Does the Fitbit Air have GPS?
No. It uses connected GPS from your phone. The Charge 6 has built-in GPS + GLONASS.
Which has better battery life?
Google rates both at up to 7 days. The Air charges faster: about 90 minutes for a full charge, and 5 minutes gives roughly a day.
Can I swim with either tracker?
Yes. Both are water resistant to 50 m, which suits pool and shallow-water swimming. Google notes they are not waterproof and water resistance can reduce over time.
Do I need a subscription?
No. Core tracking on the Fitbit Air is free in the Google Health app. Google Health Premium is optional.
