A night in the dunes near Al Qudra, Liwa or the Hatta mountains used to mean no signal at all. With a Starlink Mini you can check the weather, share your location, take a work call or stream a match from camp. The part most people get wrong is power. This guide covers what actually works.
How much power does Starlink Mini use?
- Starlink's official figure: 25–40 W on average.
- What many owners measure: around 16–20 W when idle or on light use after recent firmware updates, and 25–30 W+ with heavy downloads or obstructions.
- At start-up: brief peaks up to about 60 W while it finds satellites.
So plan for about 20–30 W on a normal camping evening, and make sure your power source can handle the start-up spike.
Option 1: USB-C power bank
The Mini can run from USB-C Power Delivery. The power bank must support a 20V output profile: at least 65 W, and ideally 100 W (20V/5A). A normal phone power bank that only puts out 18–30 W will not run it.
Rough run times at 20–30 W:
| Battery size | Approx. run time | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 99 Wh (laptop-style power bank, flight-legal size) | About 3–4 hours | An evening at camp |
| 256 Wh (small power station) | About 7–11 hours | A full evening and morning |
| 500 Wh | About 14–21 hours | A weekend with some breaks |
| 1,000 Wh | About 28–42 hours | Longer trips, or running a fan and lights too |
Estimates only. Real run time depends on usage, heat and battery quality.

Option 2: your car's 12V socket
The Mini's DC input accepts 12–48V, so it can run from your car with the right cable. There are two common ways:
- A 12V car adapter cable made for the Mini's DC barrel input.
- A 100 W USB-C PD car charger into the Mini's USB-C port.
Two things to watch:
- Don't flatten your battery. With the engine off, the Mini draws about 2–3 amp-hours per hour. That is fine for a few hours, but it's risky overnight on an older battery. A separate power station is safer.
- Use it while parked only. In the UAE, Starlink use while driving on land is not permitted. Set up once you've stopped at camp.
Option 3: solar
A 100–200 W folding solar panel feeding a power station works very well in the UAE. There is plenty of sun, and you can recharge during the day for the evening.
Keeping it working in UAE heat
- Batteries hate heat. Keep power banks and power stations in the shade or in the car with the AC on during the day. Never leave them on the dashboard.
- The dish is rated to 50°C air temperature. In midday summer sun it may slow down or pause to cool. Winter camping season (October to April) is ideal.
- Sand and dust: the Mini is IP67 rated, but keep the ports clean and wipe the connectors before plugging in.
Desert set-up tips
- Put the Mini on its kickstand on firm, flat sand, away from the tent and tall dunes.
- Use the Starlink app's "Check for obstructions" tool. The open desert is usually perfect.
- Weigh the kickstand down with a sandbag if the wind picks up.
- Switch it off when you're not using it to save battery.
