Many UAE projects start long before a fixed line arrives: a new site office on the edge of a development, a survey crew in the Western Region, a labour camp beside a pipeline project, or a temporary yard at a quarry. Since Starlink went live in the UAE in March 2026, and the TDRA later granted it a 10-year satellite services licence, project managers have had a licensed option for these places. This guide covers how to plan Starlink for remote sites and camps: which kit, how to power it, how to handle the heat, and the safety and policy points to check first.
Where Starlink fits on a remote site
Starlink works anywhere the dish has a clear view of the sky. That makes it useful where fibre or strong 5G isn't available yet, or as a second line next to an existing connection. Common uses:
- Site offices: email, drawings, cloud project tools and video calls from the first week.
- Worker and staff camps: a shared Wi-Fi network for messaging and calls home in rest areas.
- Oil & gas and utility support areas: admin cabins, gatehouses, laydown yards and temporary offices, kept outside hazardous zones.
- Survey and inspection crews: a portable connection set up while parked at each location.
- Backup: a failover line so a cut cable doesn't stop the whole site.

As a rule of thumb, use a Starlink Mini for mobile crews and small teams, and a Standard kit for a fixed office or a camp where many people connect in the evening. Bigger camps often use more than one terminal, split between work and staff networks. For a full comparison, see our Starlink Mini UAE buying guide.
Power: generators, solar and UPS
- Generator sites: put the power supply on a small UPS so generator switch-overs and refuelling don't reboot the dish every time.
- Solar or battery setups: the Mini's low draw (25–40 W) makes it much easier to run from batteries than the Standard.
- Vehicles: the Mini can run from 12 V DC, but in the UAE use on land while moving is not permitted, so set it up only when parked.
Heat and dust: the real UAE challenge
Both kits are rated up to 50°C, and summer site conditions in the UAE can go beyond that in direct sun. Practical steps:
- Mount the dish where air flows freely around it, not flat on a hot metal cabin roof or against a wall.
- Keep the router and power supply indoors or in a shaded, ventilated box. Never seal them in a closed container in the sun.
- Wipe dust off the dish gently with water and a soft cloth. Don't use pressure washers or solvents.
- Use the obstruction check in the Starlink app before fixing the mount. Cranes, scaffolding and new floors can block the view as the site grows, so re-check every few weeks.
Our Starlink troubleshooting guide covers overheating and obstruction fixes in more detail.
Plans: think about data, not just speed
At launch, UAE residential plans started from about AED 230/month, and Starlink also offers Roam and business plans. Business plans are usually priced by how much priority data you need, and a busy camp can use a lot of data. Plan names and prices change, so confirm current UAE plans in the Starlink app before you activate. A few tips:
- Estimate daily users and video use before picking a data tier.
- Separate the site's work network from staff Wi-Fi so calls home don't slow down project systems.
- If a terminal moves between sites, make sure the plan allows use at more than one location.
Safety and company policy checks
- Hazardous areas: normal Starlink kits are regular electronic equipment. On oil & gas or chemical sites, get approval from your HSE team before installing anything, and keep the equipment outside classified hazardous zones unless they say otherwise.
- Height and cables: follow your site's permit rules for roof or mast work, and route cables so they aren't trip hazards or crushed by vehicles.
- IT and security: ask your IT team about firewalls, VPNs and acceptable-use rules. Starlink in the UAE operates under local regulations, including the same content rules as other providers.
Buying for several sites

FAQ
Is Starlink legal for construction sites and camps in the UAE?
Yes. Starlink is licensed by the TDRA, and fixed or portable use at a site is allowed. The main restriction is that in-motion use on land is not permitted.
How many people can share one Starlink at a camp?
It depends on what they do. Messaging and calls use far less than video streaming. For larger camps, many operators use a Standard kit or several terminals rather than one Mini.
Can Starlink run on a generator?
Yes, but use a UPS between the generator and the Starlink power supply so short power drops don't keep restarting the system.
Can I use Starlink inside an oil & gas facility?
Only where your HSE team allows it. Keep standard kits out of classified hazardous areas and follow your site's permit process.
