Your Starlink kit arrives with a Wi-Fi name and password already set. Most people plug it in, connect and never touch the settings again. That works, but in a busy Dubai apartment block, a shared villa compound or a labour camp, a weak or shared password means neighbours, guests or strangers can end up on your connection and eat into your speed. This guide walks through the Starlink router settings that matter for security and performance, and what the built-in router can and cannot do.
Where to find the router settings
Starlink does not have a separate web admin page like most home routers. Everything is managed in the Starlink app:
- Connect your phone to the Starlink Wi-Fi.
- Open the Starlink app and sign in.
- Tap Settings to see the router and network options.
This applies to the Standard kit's router and to the Starlink Mini, which has its Wi-Fi router built into the dish. Menu names can change slightly between app versions and router generations, so if an option looks different on your phone, check the app's help section.
Step 1: Change the Wi-Fi name and password
Under the network settings, tap your network name to edit the SSID (Wi-Fi name) and password, then save. All your devices will need to reconnect with the new details.
- Use a password of at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
- Don't use your name, villa number, phone number or company name in the Wi-Fi name. It tells passers-by whose network it is.
- If you bought a kit second-hand, change the password on day one. See our used Starlink checklist for other checks.

Step 2: Kick out people you don't recognise
The app shows a list of connected devices. If you see something you don't recognise, you can pause its internet access from the app. Pausing is temporary, though, and the Starlink router does not offer permanent device blocking. The reliable way to remove an unwanted user is to change the Wi-Fi password.
Step 3: Other useful settings
| Setting | What it does | When to use it in the UAE |
|---|---|---|
| Split 2.4/5 GHz | Creates two separate networks instead of one combined one | Older smart devices, CCTV cameras or gate controllers that only work on 2.4 GHz |
| Hidden network | Hides the Wi-Fi name from nearby scans | Apartment buildings where you don't want your network listed. It's not real security on its own, so still use a strong password. |
| Content filtering | DNS-based blocking of malware, or malware plus adult content | Family homes. Note that this is not full parental control. |
| Custom DNS | Lets you choose which DNS servers the router uses | Advanced users. Content filtering overrides this. |
| Reboot | Restarts the router, locally or from the app | When speeds drop or devices won't connect |
| Bypass mode | Turns off Starlink's Wi-Fi so you can use your own router | Large villas, offices and camps that need advanced features. Undoing it requires a factory reset. |
What the Starlink router can't do
The built-in router is designed to be simple. According to independent testing by DISHYTECH, it does not offer port forwarding, MAC filtering, custom DHCP/IP ranges or proper parental controls. If you need these, for example for a business with CCTV, a POS system or staff and guest networks, the usual approach is bypass mode with a third-party router. Our guide to Starlink Wi-Fi in large villas covers router placement and mesh options.
Step 4: Protect your Starlink account
Your account controls your plan, billing and kit, so protect it as well as the Wi-Fi:
- Two-step verification: Starlink sends a one-time code to your email or phone when you sign in on a new device or change account details. Keep the email and UAE mobile number on your account up to date so the codes reach you.
- Stay signed in on your phone. If your only internet is Starlink and your plan is paused, you may need mobile data to receive the code. Staying logged in to the app avoids getting locked out at a remote site.
- Don't share your login. Give family or staff the Wi-Fi password, not your Starlink account password.
- Selling or giving away a kit? Remove it from your account first so the new owner can activate it. Our guide on how to pause, transfer or cancel Starlink explains the steps.
UAE-specific tips
- Shared accommodation and camps: Change the password regularly, for example monthly, and whenever a worker or tenant moves out.
- Businesses: Keep customer and staff Wi-Fi separate from POS and CCTV. That usually means your own router in bypass mode. See Starlink for business in the UAE.
- Follow local rules: Starlink in the UAE is licensed by TDRA, and the usual UAE internet rules apply on Starlink, just as on any other provider.
- Heat: Keep the Standard kit's router indoors, out of direct sun. A router that overheats can drop connections, which looks like a security problem but isn't.
Which kit fits your setup?
- Starlink Mini (AED 1,499, in stock): built-in Wi-Fi, ideal for travel, camping and small spaces.

FAQ
How do I change my Starlink Wi-Fi password?
Connect to your Starlink Wi-Fi, open the Starlink app, go to Settings, tap your network name, enter a new password and save. Reconnect all your devices afterwards.
Can I block a device on Starlink?
You can pause a device's internet from the app, but the Starlink router has no permanent block list. To remove someone for good, change the Wi-Fi password.
Does the Starlink router support port forwarding?
No. If you need port forwarding, for example for CCTV or a server, use bypass mode with your own router. A Starlink plan with a public IP may also be needed, so check the plan details in the Starlink app.
What happens if I factory reset Starlink?
The Wi-Fi name, password and other settings go back to the defaults, and bypass mode is turned off. You'll need to set up the network again in the app.
