November to April is the best swimming season in the UAE. The water at Kite Beach and JBR cools down, outdoor pools stop feeling like bath water, and many people restart their morning laps. If you own a Google Fitbit Air, or you are thinking about buying one, you probably want to know: can I swim with it, and what will it actually track in the water?
This guide gives you the honest answer, based on Google's own specs and help pages, plus practical tips for pool and sea swimming in Dubai.
Is the Fitbit Air waterproof?
Google rates the Fitbit Air as water resistant up to 50 metres. That means it is designed for swimming in a pool or the sea, and you do not need to take it off for a quick dip. It has no screen and no buttons, so there is nothing to tap by accident in the water.
Two important notes from Google's help pages:
- Water resistance is not permanent. It can reduce over time, especially with high-speed water (jet skis, wakeboarding, diving in hard) and contact with soap, shampoo, sunscreen, perfume or insect repellent.
- Google advises against wearing Fitbit devices in the shower, a hot tub or a sauna.

What does the Fitbit Air track when you swim?
This is where it helps to set the right expectations. Google's swim-tracking help page lists the Fitbit Air under "duration only" for swims. In simple terms:
| Swim metric | Fitbit Air |
|---|---|
| Swim duration (how long you swam) | Yes |
| Counts toward Active Zone Minutes & calories | Yes – Google says swims add to active minutes and calories (not steps) |
| Automatic laps, lengths, distance or pace | Not listed for Fitbit Air |
| Real-time heart rate during the swim | Not listed – Google says this is only on Pixel Watch 2 and newer |
| Recovery after the swim (sleep, HRV, Readiness) | Yes – 24/7 tracking continues once you are out of the water |
So the Fitbit Air is a good fit if you swim for general fitness and want your swims counted in your weekly activity and recovery picture. If you are a lap counter or triathlete who needs stroke, distance and pace data, a device with full swim tracking (for example the Fitbit Charge 6 or a Pixel Watch) will suit you better. Google can add features through updates, so check the Google Health app for the latest options.
Practical tips for swimming in the UAE
- Rinse after the sea and the pool. Google recommends rinsing with fresh water if your device touches anything other than fresh water. Gulf seawater is very salty and pools are chlorinated, so a quick rinse after every swim helps.
- Dry the band fully. The textile band needs to dry before you put it back on. A wet band in UAE humidity can irritate skin. Many swimmers keep a spare band for after the beach.
- Put sunscreen on first, then the tracker. Sunscreen and lotions can reduce water resistance over time. Let it soak in before strapping on the Fitbit Air.
- Take it off for water sports. Jet skiing, flyboarding and high dives at JBR or Al Mamzar mean high-velocity water. Leave the tracker in your bag.
- Skip the sauna and jacuzzi. Many Dubai gyms and hotel pools have both. Google advises against wearing the device in them.
- Charge before beach day. Up to 7 days of battery and around 5 minutes of charging gives about a day of use. See our Fitbit Air battery & charging tips.
Why swimmers still like the Fitbit Air
Swimming is easy on the joints and a great way to stay active when outdoor running is too hot. The Fitbit Air's real strength is what happens around your swims: 24/7 heart rate, sleep tracking, HRV, skin-temperature variation, Cardio Load and Readiness. Together these help you see if your morning swim is helping you recover or if you need a rest day. Read more in our Fitbit Air Lavender recovery guide.
Note: The Fitbit Air is a wellness device. Its health features, including AFib alerts, are not a medical diagnosis. Speak to a doctor about any health concerns.

FAQ
Can I swim in the sea with the Fitbit Air?
Yes. It is water resistant to 50 m. Rinse it with fresh water after swimming in the sea and dry the band before wearing it again.
Does the Fitbit Air count laps?
Not at the moment. Google lists the Fitbit Air as tracking swim duration only, with no automatic laps, distance or pace.
Can I shower with the Fitbit Air?
Google advises against it, because soaps and shampoos can damage water resistance and irritate your skin. Take it off for showers, saunas and hot tubs.
Will my swims count toward my daily activity?
Yes. Google says swim workouts count toward active minutes and calories, but not steps.
