The cooler months are finally arriving in the UAE. Corniche runs, beach workouts and weekend hikes in Hatta are back on the calendar, and many people go from zero to "every day" far too quickly. Two features on the Google Fitbit Air can help you build back up sensibly: Daily Readiness and Cardio Load. Here is what they actually measure, how to read them in the Google Health app, and how to use them for training in Dubai and across the GCC.
First, a quick reminder: the Fitbit Air has no screen
The Fitbit Air is a screenless, buttonless tracker. It records your heart rate, sleep and activity around the clock, and you see the results in the Google Health app on your phone. According to Google's support pages, Readiness for the Fitbit Air appears in the Google Health app, not on the device itself. So the habit to build is simple: check the app each morning after you wake up.
What is Daily Readiness?
Google describes Daily Readiness as a daily snapshot of your body's recovery status. In plain terms, it tells you whether today looks like a day to push hard or a day to go easy. Google lists three inputs:
- Heart rate variability (HRV): the variation in time between heartbeats. A drop can be a sign of stress or poor recovery.
- Resting heart rate: a resting heart rate that stays higher than usual for several days can mean your body is working harder to recover.
- Sleep: your sleep pattern over roughly the past week, not just last night.
The score is calculated once a day, shortly after you get out of bed, so you need to wear the Fitbit Air while you sleep. Your first score needs about 7 nights of sleep data. Google recommends wearing it consistently for around a month to get a more accurate personal baseline.
| Readiness score | What Google says it means | A practical UAE example |
|---|---|---|
| 65 and above (High) | Well recovered, may be ready for peak performance | Good morning for intervals, a longer run or a tougher gym session |
| 30–64 (Moderate) | Typical recovery, you can handle a workout | Normal training: steady run, padel, swim or a regular class |
| 29 and below (Low) | Prioritise rest | Easy walk in an air-conditioned mall, stretching or a full rest day |
What is Cardio Load?
Cardio Load measures the strain that exercise and daily activity put on your heart and lungs. Google says it uses a well-known training model called TRIMP (training impulse), which looks at your heart rate during activity together with factors such as age, resting heart rate and sex. Once your heart rate rises into the light zone and above, you start to build Cardio Load. The harder and longer you work, the faster it climbs.
The Google Health app then gives you a Target Load: a suggested weekly range based on how your last week compares with your longer-term average. Your training status is shown as one of three states:
- Under training: you are doing less than your usual level.
- Improving fitness: you are in the sweet spot for building fitness.
- Over training: you are doing much more than your body is used to, so the risk of fatigue goes up.
Cardio Load needs about 7 days and nights of wear before it shows a first target, and Google suggests around 28 days of continuous wear for the best results.
What is free and what needs Premium?
Based on Google's help pages, Readiness and Cardio Load tracking do not require a subscription. Without Premium, your weekly target is based on your average Cardio Load over the previous four weeks. With the optional Google Health Premium, the Gemini-powered Health Coach can set and adjust your weekly target and suggest training changes based on your Readiness. Google notes that Premium features can change and may vary by country and device. For a full breakdown, see our guide to Google Health Premium and the Gemini coach.
How to use Readiness and Cardio Load in the UAE
- Wear it to bed every night. Without sleep data there is no Readiness score. The textile band fits wrists from 130 to 210 mm, so it is comfortable enough for sleep.
- Build up slowly as the weather cools. If you trained less during the summer, your four-week average will be low. Aim for "Improving fitness" rather than jumping straight into "Over training" in your first week back outdoors.
- Watch the heat. Even in October and November, midday humidity can push your heart rate up at an easy pace. Train early morning or after sunset, and expect Cardio Load to rise faster on hot days.
- Respect late nights. Weddings, Eid gatherings and late dinners shorten sleep. If Readiness drops after a few short nights, swap a hard session for an easy one.
- Use swims and padel too. The Fitbit Air is water resistant to 50 m, so pool sessions can count. For more on swimming and recovery, read our Fitbit Air Lavender recovery guide.
- Look at trends, not one number. One low score is not a problem. Several low days in a row is a signal to rest.
Note: the Fitbit Air is a wellness device, not a medical device. Its health features and AFib alerts are not a medical diagnosis. Speak to a doctor about any health concerns.

FAQ
Can I see my Readiness score on the Fitbit Air itself?
No. The Fitbit Air has no screen. Your Readiness score and Cardio Load appear in the Google Health app on your phone.
How long until I get my first Readiness score?
Google says you need about 7 nights of sleep with the device. For the most accurate baseline, wear it consistently for around a month.
Do I need Google Health Premium for Cardio Load?
No. Cardio Load tracking works without Premium. Premium adds the Gemini-powered coach, which can adjust your weekly target for you.
Does Ramadan fasting affect Readiness?
It can. Changes to sleep timing and shorter nights can affect HRV and resting heart rate, which may lower your score. Treat it as a guide to take it easier, not a reason to worry.
