Starlink is now licensed by the TDRA and live in the UAE, and the first question most of our customers ask is simple: should I buy the Starlink Mini or the Standard kit? Both connect to the same low Earth orbit satellite network, but they are built for very different jobs. This guide compares them side by side, with UAE-specific tips for villas, farms, desert trips and boats, so you can choose the right one before you spend money.
The short answer
- Choose Starlink Mini if you want something portable: weekend desert camping, a boat, a site office that moves, or a backup connection you can carry in a backpack.
- Choose Starlink Standard if the dish will stay in one place: a villa, farm, majlis or remote camp where many people share the connection all day.
Both kits work with UAE plans, but plan availability and pricing are set by Starlink, not by the retailer. Always confirm the current plan and price in the Starlink app before you activate.

Portability: where the Mini wins
The Mini is roughly the size of a laptop and weighs about the same. Its Wi-Fi router is built into the dish, so there is no separate box to carry. Because it runs on 12–48V DC or a 100W USB-C PD power bank, you can power it from a car socket (with the right adapter) or a large power bank on a desert trip. We explain run times and power options in our guide to powering Starlink Mini in the UAE desert.
The Standard kit is larger, needs mains power, and draws two to three times more electricity. It can be run from a generator or a big inverter setup, but it is not a grab-and-go device.

Home and farm use: where the Standard wins
For a villa or farm with many users, the Standard kit is the more comfortable choice. It has a larger antenna, a separate router you can place in the best spot indoors, and support for Starlink mesh nodes to extend coverage across a large house or majlis. The Mini's built-in Wi-Fi covers roughly 112 m², which is fine for a camp, a boat cabin or a small flat, but may not reach every room in a big villa.
Starlink itself reports typical download speeds in the region of 45–280 Mbps, with real results depending on location, sky view and network load. In areas with good fibre, fibre usually remains faster; Starlink makes most sense where fibre or 5G is weak or unavailable.
UAE rules you should know
- No in-motion use on land. In the UAE, using Starlink while driving is not permitted. Set the dish up only when you are parked or camped.
- Maritime use is approved. If you plan to use it on a boat, read our guide to Starlink for boats in the UAE.
- Residential capacity can be limited. Recent UAE reports said some residential areas, including parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, were listed as "at capacity" with a waiting list. Check your address in the Starlink app before you buy.
- Roaming abroad has limits. Starlink's Roam service is meant for travel, not permanent use in another country, so check the terms before taking your kit across GCC borders.
Plans and running costs
Residential plans in the UAE were advertised from around AED 230 per month at launch, with higher tiers and separate Roam (portable) plans also offered. Prices and plan names can change, so treat these as a guide only and confirm the current price in the Starlink app. Remember that the Mini also uses less power, which matters if you run it from batteries or a generator.

Quick tips before you buy
- Check service availability at your exact address in the Starlink app.
- Decide if the dish will move. If yes, choose Mini; if no, Standard is usually better.
- Find a spot with a clear view of the sky, away from walls, palm trees and tall buildings.
- In summer, give the dish shade-free sky but keep the router or power bank out of direct sun.
- Budget for the monthly plan as well as the hardware.
FAQ
Is the Starlink Mini slower than the Standard?
The Mini has a smaller antenna, so in busy areas the Standard kit can perform better. For most travel, camping and backup use, the Mini is more than enough. Real speeds depend on location, obstructions and network load.
Can I use Starlink Mini while driving in the UAE?
No. In-motion use on land is not permitted in the UAE. Park first, then set up the dish. Use at sea is covered under maritime approval.
Can the Mini replace home internet in a villa?
It can for a small household, but a large villa with many users is usually better served by the Standard kit and its separate router, which supports mesh.
Do both kits use the same plans?
Both work on Starlink service plans, but which plans are offered for each kit can change. Confirm in the Starlink app before activating.
