The Apple iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, is eSIM only. It has no physical SIM tray, so your old plastic SIM card will not go into it. The good news: all three UAE mobile operators, du, e& (Etisalat) and Virgin Mobile UAE, support eSIM, and switching usually takes a few minutes in the operator's app. This guide walks you through each one in simple steps.

Before you start: a quick checklist
- Wi-Fi: Apple recommends a Wi-Fi network or hotspot during eSIM setup, and e& says the new phone needs Wi-Fi to activate.
- UAE PASS or Emirates ID: du and Virgin Mobile verify you with UAE PASS. e& uses UAE PASS or facial recognition with your Emirates ID.
- The latest operator app on your current phone: du app, e& UAE app or Virgin Mobile UAE app.
- Be in the UAE: e& and Virgin Mobile both say eSIM activation or switching must be done inside the UAE.
- Keep your old phone on until the new line works. When you switch, the old SIM stops working while the eSIM is set up.
Option 1: eSIM Quick Transfer from your old iPhone
If you are coming from another iPhone, Apple's eSIM Quick Transfer can move your number during setup, without visiting a shop. Apple says both iPhones need iOS 18.4 or later, and that some carriers also let you convert a physical SIM to an eSIM this way. Just keep both phones close together during setup and follow the prompts. If it doesn't work for your line, use your operator's app instead (below).
Option 2: Set up with your operator's app
du
- Open the du app and go to Get more done → View more → Manage SIM.
- Select your SIM and choose the option to transfer to eSIM / the new iPhone.
- Verify with UAE PASS.
- Wait a few minutes. du sends an SMS when it's done. Make a test call to check it works.
If du emails you a QR code ("Your du eSIM is ready"), open it on the iPhone Duo and tap Install now. du warns that an eSIM can only be installed once, so do not delete it from the phone later. Gulf News reports a fee of about AED 20 to convert an existing physical SIM. Check the du app for the current fee.
e& (Etisalat)
- In the e& UAE app, go to Account → Manage → My SIM Cards → Replace SIM (or Switch to eSIM).
- Verify with facial recognition or UAE PASS.
- Scan the QR code shown with your iPhone Duo, or enter the activation codes by hand.
- Finish activation on Wi-Fi.
e& says switching in the app is free for a limited time, and you must activate the eSIM within 24 hours of the request or it is cancelled. Going back to a physical SIM in a store costs AED 26.25 (including VAT). e& also says a factory reset removes the eSIM, so you would need to visit an e& store.
Virgin Mobile UAE
- Connect to Wi-Fi and open the Virgin Mobile app.
- Go to My Account → My Number → Move to eSIM.
- Verify with UAE PASS.
- Tap Install eSIM. Your iPhone opens Settings, where you add the cellular plan.
Virgin Mobile says there is no extra charge to activate an eSIM, and you can swap up to 5 times a year (AED 10 per extra swap). If you don't use UAE PASS, Virgin Mobile offers a free home visit by an activation specialist for Emirates ID holders.

du vs e& vs Virgin Mobile: eSIM at a glance
| Operator | Where to switch | ID check | Fee (check before you switch) |
|---|---|---|---|
| du | du app → Manage SIM | UAE PASS | About AED 20 to convert (reported) |
| e& (Etisalat) | e& UAE app → My SIM Cards → Replace SIM | UAE PASS or face recognition | Free in app (limited-time offer) |
| Virgin Mobile UAE | Virgin Mobile app → My Number → Move to eSIM | UAE PASS | No activation charge |
Practical tips for UAE users
- Two numbers? iPhone can store many eSIMs, and you can use two lines at the same time. That's handy for a work and a personal number, or a UAE line plus a home-country line.
- Coming from Android? Apple says to contact your carrier. With iOS 26 or later, some carriers support direct Android-to-iPhone transfer.
- Visitors: du and Virgin Mobile both sell visitor/tourist eSIMs. Virgin Mobile verifies visitors with a passport and facial recognition.
- Taking the phone abroad? Check that your home-country operator supports eSIM before you buy. The iPhone Duo can't use a physical SIM.
- Don't delete your eSIM when troubleshooting. Restart the phone first, then contact your operator.
