Bought a Starlink in Dubai and now need to travel, take a break over summer, or sell the kit? Managing your subscription is mostly done in the Starlink app or your account at starlink.com, but a few choices work differently in the UAE because some areas are at capacity. This guide covers pausing, switching plans, moving a kit to a new owner and cancelling, with practical tips so you don't lose service you still need.
Quick note: Starlink changes its plans, prices and account rules from time to time. Use this as a guide, and always check the current options and prices in the Starlink app before you make a change.
Your options at a glance
| What you want | Usual option | UAE tip |
|---|---|---|
| Short break (travel, summer) | Standby Mode, or cancel and reactivate later | In busy areas, cancelling residential may mean you can't get it back right away |
| Use the dish in other places | Roam plan | In-motion use on land is not permitted in the UAE |
| Lower your monthly bill | Move to Residential Lite | Lite was about AED 230/month at launch; check current price in the app |
| Sell or give the kit away | Transfer from your account | Give the buyer the Starlink identifier and factory reset the router |
| Stop service completely | Cancel in your account | Service normally runs until the end of the billing cycle |
Pausing: Standby Mode explained
Starlink used to offer a free "pause" on some plans. It has since been replaced by Standby Mode: a low monthly fee that keeps your kit on a very slow connection (reported at around 500 Kbps). That's enough for messages and basic browsing, but not for streaming or video calls.
- Reports from mid-2026 say the Standby fee went up from USD 5 to USD 10 a month in many markets. Check the price shown in your app, as UAE billing may differ.
- Standby is for existing Roam or Residential customers who switch to it, and reports say it can stay on for up to 12 months.
- For residential users, reviewers note that Standby doesn't guarantee your place in a busy area. If the area fills up, you may not be able to switch back to full speed straight away.
Switching plans
You can change plans from your account (Your Starlinks → Manage). The most common moves for UAE customers are:
- Residential → Residential Lite to save money if you mostly browse and stream. At launch in the UAE, Lite was about AED 230/month and Residential about AED 300/month.
- Residential → Roam if you travel within the UAE or across the GCC. Roam has lower priority on busy cells, and UAE Roam pricing may be shown in USD, so the AED cost depends on your card's exchange rate.
- Back to Residential. Reviewers report that switching back can take until the end of your billing cycle. In areas marked "at capacity", it may not be possible right away.

Why capacity matters in Dubai and Sharjah
In late August 2026, Khaleej Times reported that Starlink showed "at capacity" for some addresses in Dubai and Sharjah, such as Al Quoz and Al Majaz, with new customers placed on a waitlist. That changes the advice:
- If you have an active residential plan in a busy area, think twice before cancelling for a short trip. Standby may cost a little, but cancelling could mean waiting to get service back.
- If you live outside the busy areas, or mostly use the dish away from home, Roam or cancel-and-reactivate may work fine.
- Before you buy a second kit or move house, check availability for the new address on starlink.com.
Transferring a Starlink to a new owner
Selling your kit, or bought one second-hand? According to Starlink's support guidance as summarised by reviewers, the usual steps are:
- The seller pays any outstanding balance. Transfers are blocked while money is owed.
- The seller cancels service, notes the Starlink identifier, then uses Transfer on the device in their account. This removes it from their account for good.
- The seller factory resets the router and gives the buyer the kit and the identifier.
- The buyer creates their own Starlink account and activates the kit with the identifier.
Things to know: unused service days are lost, the warranty doesn't restart, and kits are reported to have a minimum time on an account before they can be transferred. For more buyer checks, see our used Starlink checklist.
Cancelling service
Cancel from your account on starlink.com (Your Starlinks → Manage → Cancel Service). Reviewers note that cancelling may not be possible in the app itself. Service normally continues until the end of the current billing cycle. Keep your kit powered on now and then so it can receive software updates if you plan to reactivate later.

FAQ
Can I pause Starlink Residential in the UAE?
Not with the old free pause. You can switch to Standby Mode (paid, very slow) or cancel and reactivate later. In busy areas, reactivating residential may not be possible straight away.
Will I lose my residential spot if I cancel?
Possibly, if your area is at capacity. Starlink gave no timeframe for when waitlisted areas will open, so check availability for your address before you cancel.
Can I use Roam while driving in the UAE?
No. In-motion use on land is not permitted in the UAE. Use Starlink only when you're parked or stationary on land. Maritime use is approved separately.
Does the warranty transfer if I buy a used kit?
Reports say the warranty runs from the original purchase date and doesn't reset on transfer, so ask the seller for the purchase date and receipt.
