If you travel around the UAE – weekend camps in the desert, trips to Hatta or the wadis of Ras Al Khaimah, or long drives to Liwa – you have probably asked one question: is my phone hotspot or a pocket 4G/5G router (MiFi) enough, or do I need a Starlink Mini?
Both have a place. This guide compares them honestly so you can decide based on where you go, how many people are with you, and what you need the internet for.
The basic difference
A mobile hotspot or MiFi uses the e& or du mobile network. It is small, cheap to run, and works anywhere there is a good mobile signal – including while you drive.
A Starlink Mini connects directly to Starlink's low-Earth-orbit satellites. It does not need a mobile tower nearby, so it can work deep in the desert or in mountain valleys where phone signal drops. It needs a clear view of the sky, a power source, and – in the UAE – it must be stationary when used on land.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Phone hotspot / MiFi | Starlink Mini |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Only where e& or du has signal | Almost anywhere with open sky in a Starlink-covered area |
| Use while driving (on land) | Yes | No – in-motion use on land is not permitted in the UAE |
| Size & weight | Pocket size | 29.85 × 25.9 × 3.85 cm, about 1.1 kg |
| Power use | Very low (phone or small battery) | 25–40 W average; 12–48 V DC or USB-C PD (100 W) |
| Wi-Fi for groups | Usually a handful of devices | Built-in Wi-Fi 5 router, up to 128 devices, ~112 m² coverage |
| Weather & heat | Phones can overheat in summer sun | IP67 rated, operates -30°C to 50°C |
| Running cost | Your existing mobile data plan | Separate Starlink subscription (e.g. Roam) |
| Upfront cost | Low, or zero if you use your phone | Starlink Mini kit – AED 1,499 at our store |
When a mobile hotspot is enough
- City and highway trips. Mobile coverage along main UAE roads and in towns is generally strong, so a hotspot is the simplest option.
- Solo or couple travel. If only one or two phones need internet for maps and messages, a hotspot does the job.
- You need internet while moving. Navigation, music, and calls in the car should stay on mobile data, because Starlink Mini cannot be used in motion on land in the UAE.
- Light data use. Messaging and browsing don't need a dedicated satellite plan.
When Starlink Mini makes more sense
- Remote camping spots. Deep dunes, parts of the Empty Quarter edge, and some mountain valleys can have weak or no mobile signal. Starlink does not depend on towers.
- Groups and families. One Mini can share Wi-Fi with many phones, tablets, and laptops at the camp.
- Working remotely. Video calls and large uploads are easier on a dedicated connection than on a phone that is also overheating in the sun.
- Multi-day trips. If you stay in one place for a few days, setting up the Mini once gives the whole camp internet.
- Boats. Maritime use is approved in the UAE – see our guide to Starlink for boats.

The best answer for many travellers: use both
Many UAE campers end up with a simple combination:
- On the road: phone hotspot for maps and calls.
- At camp: park, set up the Starlink Mini on its kickstand with a clear view of the sky, and connect everyone to its Wi-Fi.
- Power: run the Mini from a USB-C PD power bank (100 W) or a 12 V car socket with a suitable adapter – our Starlink Mini Car Adapter (12V) is AED 375. Never leave the engine idling unattended just to power it.
- Pause when not needed: Starlink lets you manage or pause your plan in the app, so you only pay for the months you travel. Check the current rules in the Starlink app.
What does Starlink cost to run in the UAE?
Starlink plans in the UAE have been reported at launch as Residential Lite from about AED 230/month and Residential from about AED 300/month, with Roam plans for portable use priced separately (Gulf News reported Roam from around AED 190/month for 100 GB). Prices and plan names can change, so always confirm current pricing in the Starlink app before you subscribe. For a full breakdown, read Starlink Mini in UAE: Price, Legality & Plans.
For mobile data, compare the current data-only or add-on packs from e& and du – they change often, and many people already have enough data on their phone plan for light travel.
UAE-specific tips
- Heat: In summer, phones used as hotspots often slow down or shut off in direct sun. Starlink Mini is rated up to 50°C, but give it airflow and avoid placing it on hot car roofs at midday.
- Sand and dust: The Mini is IP67 with its cable and plug installed. Wipe dust off the face gently with a soft cloth.
- Obstructions: High dunes and canyon walls can block part of the sky. Use the Starlink app's obstruction checker and move to higher, open ground.
- Stay legal: Set the Mini up only when parked or camped on land.
FAQ
Can I use Starlink Mini while driving in the UAE?
No. In-motion use on land is not permitted in the UAE. Use it when parked or at camp, and rely on your phone hotspot while driving.
Is Starlink faster than a 5G hotspot?
It depends on location. Near a strong 5G tower, mobile data can be very fast. In remote areas with weak signal, Starlink is usually far more reliable because it does not depend on towers.
Can one Starlink Mini serve a whole family camp?
Yes. Its built-in Wi-Fi supports up to 128 devices with coverage of about 112 m², which is plenty for a typical camp setup.
Do I need a power bank for Starlink Mini?
You need some power source – a USB-C PD power bank rated for 100 W, a 12–48 V DC source, or a car socket with a suitable adapter. Battery run time depends on the bank's capacity and the Mini's 25–40 W average draw.
