Starlink for Boats in the UAE: Can You Use Starlink Mini at Sea?

Starlink on a boat in the UAE: which plan covers coastal and offshore use, how to wire the Mini to 12V/24V, where to mount it, and how to protect it from salt and heat.

Boats moored in a marina, Starlink for boats in the UAE

Mobile signal around the UAE coast is good near the marinas, then drops away fast once you head out past the islands. That is why fishing crews, yacht owners and dive operators keep asking us one question: can I use Starlink on my boat in the UAE?

Yes, with the right setup and the right plan. Here's what we tell boat owners before they buy.

Is Starlink allowed on boats in the UAE?

Starlink received its UAE licence from the TDRA and went live in March 2026, and maritime service is one of the approved uses. (The restriction in the UAE is on using Starlink while moving on land, not at sea.)

The important detail is the plan. A home (Residential) plan is meant for a fixed address. For a boat you need a plan that allows use in motion and on water. Starlink's portable Roam plans cover a lot of coastal use, while use far offshore needs Starlink's maritime or Priority-type plans. Plan names and coverage change, so before you activate, open the Starlink app, choose your plan, and check the coverage map for where you actually fish or cruise.

A clear view of the sky matters more than anything else, on land or at sea.

Starlink Mini or a bigger dish for your boat?

Boat type Good fit Why
Fishing boats, speedboats, small cruisers (up to ~40 ft) Starlink Mini Small, light, low power, built-in Wi-Fi, runs on 12V or 24V
Day-charter and dive boats Starlink Mini Enough speed for guests' phones, card payments and weather updates
Larger yachts and commercial vessels Flat High Performance kit Built for permanent mounting and harsher conditions, more power and throughput

For most boats we see in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah marinas, the Mini is the practical choice. It weighs about 1.1 kg, uses roughly 25–40 W, and has an IP67 rating against water and dust.

How to power Starlink Mini on a boat

  • 12V or 24V boat systems: the Mini's DC input accepts 12–48V, so it can run from most boat batteries with the correct DC cable. Use a fused circuit, just as you would for a chartplotter.
  • USB-C: a USB-C PD charger or power bank rated for 100W (20V/5A) is the simplest option for occasional use.
  • Battery drain: at around 20–30W, the Mini uses roughly 2–3 amp-hours per hour on a 12V battery. Switch it off when you don't need it on long trips.

Mounting tips

  1. Go high and clear. Masts, T-tops, radar arches and bimini frames all block signal. The top of a T-top or radar arch is usually the best spot.
  2. Use a proper marine mount. The kickstand is for land. On a boat, use a rigid mount or pole adapter so the dish can't shift in chop.
  3. Keep it away from the radar beam and other antennas where possible.
  4. Seal the cable entry so water can't track down into the cabin.

Salt, sun and heat: looking after it

UAE waters are hard on electronics. Rinse the dish and connectors with fresh water after trips, check the cable for chafe, and keep the power supply out of direct sun. The Mini is rated to 50°C air temperature, and in peak summer it may slow down briefly if it overheats. That is normal, and it recovers once it cools.

What speeds can you expect?

At sea with a clear sky, the Mini typically gives around 100–200 Mbps download. That is enough for video calls, streaming, weather apps and card machines. Speeds depend on your plan, how busy the network is, and how clear the view of the sky is.

Quick checklist before you buy

  • Where do you use the boat: marina, coast, or far offshore?
  • Which Starlink plan covers that area? Check in the app.
  • 12V or 24V system? Get the right DC cable.
  • Where will you mount it with a clear view of the sky?

FAQ

Does Starlink work on boats in UAE waters?

Yes. Maritime use is part of Starlink's UAE approval. Pick a plan that allows use on water and in motion.

Can I use my home Starlink plan on my boat?

A Residential plan is tied to a fixed address, so it isn't the right plan for a boat. Use a Roam or maritime plan instead.

Is the Starlink Mini waterproof?

It has an IP67 rating with the cable fitted, so spray and rain are fine. Rinse off salt after trips.
