Starlink Speed in the UAE: What to Expect and How to Test It Properly

How fast is Starlink in the UAE? Learn what affects your speed, how to run a proper speed test step by step, and simple tips for better results in Dubai and beyond.

Starlink has been live in the UAE since March 2026, and one question we hear at our Dubai store more than any other is simple: "How fast is it, really?" The honest answer is that Starlink speed is not one fixed number. It depends on your kit, your plan, where you put the dish and even what time of day you test. This guide explains what to realistically expect in the UAE, and, more importantly, how to run a speed test properly so you know whether your setup is working as it should.

Why there is no single "UAE Starlink speed"

Because the service only launched in the UAE in 2026, there is still very little independent, UAE-specific speed data published. Be careful with websites quoting exact "UAE averages". Many are estimates or mix data from other countries.

What we do know is the global trend. According to Ookla data reported by Broadband Breakfast, close to 45% of Starlink users measured median speeds of at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload in Q4 2025, up from about 17% in Q1 2025. That data mostly reflects the US market, but it shows the network has been getting faster as more satellites go up. Your own results in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or the desert will depend on the factors below.

What affects your Starlink speed in the UAE

Factor Why it matters UAE tip
Obstructions The dish needs a wide, clear view of the sky. Even small blockages cause drop-outs. Villa walls, balcony overhangs and nearby towers are common culprits. Use the obstruction check in the Starlink app before you mount anything.
Kit type The Starlink Mini has a smaller antenna than the Standard kit, so peak speeds are generally lower. For a home or office that needs the most speed, compare the Standard Kit with the Starlink Mini.
Plan Different plans can be treated differently when the network is busy. Confirm current plan details and prices in the Starlink app before you subscribe.
Time of day Evening hours are usually busier, so speeds can dip. Test in the morning and again in the evening to see your real range.
Wi-Fi A slow result is often your Wi-Fi, not the satellite link. Thick concrete walls in UAE villas can block Wi-Fi. Move the router or test close to it.
Heat and weather Heavy rain or dust storms can briefly affect the connection. Extreme heat can stress any electronics. The Mini is rated from -30°C to 50°C. Avoid placing it near hot surfaces or in a closed car in summer.

How to run a proper Starlink speed test (step by step)

  1. Check for obstructions first. Open the Starlink app and run the obstruction check. If the map shows blocked areas, move the dish before you test anything else.
  2. Restart the system. Unplug the power, wait about 30 seconds, plug back in and give it a few minutes to reconnect fully.
  3. Test close to the router. Stand in the same room as the router, or use a wired connection if your setup supports it. This removes Wi-Fi problems from the result.
  4. Pause other devices. Stop large downloads, phone backups and streaming on other devices while you test.
  5. Use more than one tool. Run the speed test inside the Starlink app, then try a website such as Speedtest.net or Fast.com.
  6. Test at different times. Do at least three tests: morning, afternoon and evening. Write down download, upload and latency (ping) each time.
  7. Compare the results. If speeds are good near the router but slow in other rooms, the problem is Wi-Fi coverage, not Starlink.

Practical tips for better speeds in the UAE

  • Go up. A roof or high mount usually gives a clearer sky view than a balcony or garden corner.
  • Keep the dish clean. After a sandstorm, gently wipe dust off the surface. Do not use harsh chemicals.
  • Power the Mini properly. The Mini typically draws around 25–40 W and accepts 12–48V DC or USB-C PD (100W). A weak power bank or cheap cable can cause restarts that look like "slow internet". See our desert power guide.
  • Remember the rules. In the UAE, using Starlink while moving on land is not permitted. Test and use it while parked or at a fixed location.
  • Still slow? Our Starlink troubleshooting guide covers heat, dust and power fixes in more detail.

Which kit should you choose for speed?

If speed at a fixed home, villa or office is your top priority, the Standard kit is usually the better fit. If you need something compact for camping, boats or travel, the Mini is easier to carry and power. Current prices in our store:

FAQ

Is Starlink fast enough for video calls and streaming in the UAE?

For most users with a clear sky view, Starlink is generally good enough for video calls and HD streaming. Results vary by kit, plan, location and time of day, so test your own setup at different times.

Why is my Starlink slower in the evening?

Evenings are usually the busiest time on the network, so speeds can dip. If speeds are very low all day, check for obstructions and Wi-Fi problems first.

Is the Starlink Mini slower than the Standard kit?

Generally yes, at peak. The Mini has a smaller antenna, so the Standard kit usually delivers higher top speeds. The Mini's advantage is size, weight (around 1.1 kg) and flexible power options.

Which speed test should I trust?

Use the Starlink app's test together with an independent site such as Speedtest.net. Run several tests near the router and note the range rather than relying on a single result.
