Since Starlink went live in the UAE in March 2026, one question comes up more than any other at our Dubai counter: should I get Starlink, or is 5G home internet from e& or du good enough? Both are "no cable" options. They work very differently, though, and the right choice depends on where you live and how you use the internet. This guide compares them for UAE buyers.
How each one works
5G home internet (e& Home Wireless, du Home Wireless) uses a router that connects to the nearest mobile tower, like a big phone hotspot. You plug it in indoors and you are online. Speed depends on how strong the 5G signal is inside your home and how busy the local tower is.
Starlink uses a dish (or the compact Starlink Mini) that talks to low-orbit satellites about 550 km up. It does not need towers or fibre lines nearby. It does need a clear view of the sky, which means mounting it outside on a roof, terrace or open ground.
Starlink holds a 10-year licence from the TDRA and works under the same UAE rules as other providers. That includes content filtering and the usual VoIP restrictions, so it will not unlock blocked calling apps.
Starlink vs 5G home internet: side by side
| Starlink (Residential) | 5G Home Wireless (e& / du) | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly plan (reported) | About AED 230 (Residential Lite) to AED 300 (Residential) | From about AED 229 (before VAT) for entry plans; higher tiers around AED 299–349 |
| Hardware | You buy the kit up front (Mini AED 1,499 or Standard V4X AED 1,899 at our store) | Router usually supplied with the plan; check contract terms |
| Typical speed | Roughly 45–280 Mbps down, 10–30 Mbps up | Varies a lot with indoor 5G signal and tower load |
| Latency | Around 25–60 ms | Usually lower in good coverage |
| Needs | Clear sky view, outdoor mounting | Good 5G signal indoors |
| Works in remote areas | Yes, that is its main strength | Only where there is 5G/4G coverage |
| Billing | Monthly subscription managed in the Starlink app | Operator contract terms and exit fees may apply |
Prices are as reported in UAE media during 2026 and can change. Always confirm current Starlink plan prices in the Starlink app, and check e& and du websites for their latest offers.
When 5G home internet makes more sense
- You live in a city apartment. Many parts of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have good 5G coverage, and you often can't mount a dish on a shared roof.
- You want plug-and-play. No mounting, no cables through windows.
- You don't want to pay for hardware up front. Operator plans usually include the router.
- You game competitively or make lots of video calls. Good 5G (and fibre even more so) usually gives lower, steadier latency.
Industry analysts quoted in UAE press agree: in well-served parts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, fibre generally beats Starlink on speed, reliability and latency, and 5G is often a strong second.
When Starlink is the better choice
- Farms, villas and new communities where fibre has not arrived yet and indoor 5G is weak.
- Desert camps, mountain homes in Hatta or Ras Al Khaimah, and remote work sites. See our guide to powering Starlink Mini in the desert.
- Boats and marine use, where maritime service is approved. More in Starlink for boats in the UAE.
- Backup internet for a business that can't go offline if a fibre line is cut. Read Starlink Mini for business.
- Portable internet you can take between sites. Remember: in-motion use on land is not permitted in the UAE, so set it up when parked.
Practical UAE tips before you decide
- Test your indoor 5G first. Run a speed test on your phone (on 5G, not Wi-Fi) in the room where the router would go, at evening peak time. If it is fast and steady, 5G may be all you need.
- Check Starlink availability for your address. In late August 2026 the Starlink website was reported to list some Dubai and Abu Dhabi areas as "at capacity" with a waitlist. Enter your exact address before buying a kit for a fixed home.
- Use the obstruction check. The Starlink app shows whether buildings or palm trees block the sky. Villa rooftops usually work well; balconies hemmed in by towers often don't.
- Plan for summer heat. Mount the dish where air can flow around it. Our troubleshooting guide covers heat and dust.
- Count the full cost. Starlink = hardware plus monthly plan. 5G = monthly plan plus any contract exit fees. Compare over 12–24 months, not just month one.
- Consider both. Many villa owners and businesses keep 5G or fibre as the main line and Starlink as backup.

Frequently asked questions
Is Starlink faster than 5G home internet in the UAE?
Not usually in cities. Starlink typically delivers around 45–280 Mbps download. Good 5G home internet in a well-covered area can match or beat that with lower latency. Starlink wins where 5G signal is weak or missing.
Is Starlink cheaper than e& or du home wireless?
Monthly prices are in a similar range (roughly AED 230–300 for Starlink residential plans as reported, versus about AED 229 and up for entry 5G home plans before VAT). Starlink also needs an upfront hardware purchase, so over the first year it usually costs more. Confirm current prices in the Starlink app and on operator websites.
Can I use WhatsApp calls on Starlink in the UAE?
Starlink follows TDRA rules like e& and du, so the same VoIP restrictions apply. Approved apps such as Botim, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet should work as they do on other UAE networks.
Which Starlink kit should I buy for a villa?
For a fixed villa install, the Standard kit is usually the better fit. The Mini suits portable use, camping and backup. See our Mini vs Standard comparison, or contact us for advice. Buying for a company or in bulk? Visit our wholesale page.
